Looking for European breeder in GA/SE USA

Hi, me and my wife are looking for a European Doberman breeder in the Atlanta GA/Southeast US area. We are looking for a dog that we can train for assistance/stability style work to help my wife with things like getting her coat off and picking up dropped things. With possible obediance competitions. My wife is starting training to be a dog trainer at the beginning of 2013 so she can become an assistance/therapy/mobility dog trainer. We currently have 2 Austrailian Shepherds who are nearing the end of their time with us as they are 12yrs old and we got them as rescue pups. We have trained both of them with help from a trainer here in Atlanta and we continue to get comments on how well they behave and are trained. We are willing to travel to visit the breeder as we are not looking for a pup until we replace one of our current dogs as 2 in the house is enough for us. We are looking at European as we heard they are slightly larger sized/taller body structure and we like the look of the european over the American.

Second question. how tall of a fence is recommended for Dobermans, as we currently have a 4' fence currently and are woondering if we need to install higher fencing for the doberman.

It's really a fallacy to think Euro's are taller, bigger, etc. Usually Euro-greeders say this stuff to sell dogs. There's not much difference between the FCI and AKC standards.

Check out the links in my signature line. The UDC and DPCA both have breeder referral lists.

I have a 27.5" male who weighs 90# and he can clear a 4' fence with no problem.

Cam and Sheba will become famous soon enough
I got my puppy from Schutzhund Quality German Shepherd and Doberman Pinscher Breeders and i believe they said they have some european blood lines. it has been a while since i talked to the breeder or have looked at her papers so i can't recall 100% off hand. sheba is a great dog so far. however, if you do decide to go with this breeder, you must insist that they have the tail and dew claws taken care of or else you will have to have it done yourself. Mr. Daigle is very helpful, informative, and concerned about the potential homes of his wonderful dogs. they are located in louisianna.

Check out this thread on reputable breeders.

Reputable breeders - for new folks

In my opinion, NOT AT ALL reputable. OP, please don't get sucked in by fancy websites.

I wouldn't consider Svetanhaus a reputable breeder.

I've had different sizes of male and female Dobermans for 30 years and always had a 4 foot fence. No one has ever tried to go over them. I have no doubt that one could if they really wanted to, but mine have just never pushed that boundary.

Neither has he. I have a baby gate that I use to separate when Yogi is feeling feisty and Bacchus has never or would never kangaroo it. The ability is certainly there but the overstepping the mommy boundary outweighs it. The 4' plus jumping was to get to the groundhog that was in a vacant pasture at my prior home.

OK so if they are about the same size we would then look at either Adamas, Kalibur or Demira Dobermans here in Atlanta. What would be your determining factor as to who you would choose to approach with what we are looking for?

Just to show that European bloodlines aren't necessarily bigger than American...

I have a 27.5" male, imported from Europe, who weighs 75# and HAS cleared a 4' fence with no problem.

I would recommend at least a 5' fence. This is what I have, but he is not left out unattended.

May I ask what made you decide on a Doberman, OP?

Any of them. Their breeding is about the same with common ancestors. Just be upfront about what you want. I would call Adamas first.

Me and my wife researched out the temperment and abilities of different dogs. Their trainability, companion qualities as well as their work/Agility/obedience traits are the majority of the reasons. This is not something we have just jumped at, we have researched for the last 3-5 months on dogs. We have looked at German Shepherds, Dobermans, Alaskan Malamutes, Siberian Huskeys, Labs, etc. Also we love the look of the doberman also their short hair after having our 2 Australian Shepherds with their long hair. We love the "velcro" of the Aussie and is also why doberman is our current choice.
