Broken Oaks Dobermans - WI

Does anyone have a dog from here? Thoughts on this breeder? I'm interested in her dogs.

Or does anyone know of other Wisconsin breeders? Broken Oaks was the only one I could find.

While I don't know the dogs personally I've never been the biggest fan. No health testing or titles of any kind are mentioned anywhere on the website for how much they tout their beauty and potential (Obed work for example). More than happy to be corrected if they do in fact test and title.
Milwaukee has MOA dobes and A-List is in the state as well and both test and title their dogs.
A member recently purchased an a-list puppy too if I remember correctly and will hopefully comment
There were one or two more mentioned in a different thread ill link when I can as well.

Sorry for any errors/typos...on my phone

You may have to travel a bit for a good pup. You might look into Bruda Dobermans in Illinois: Home -. There are also some others in Illinois and Michigan.

I am not sure why you would limit your search for a long term family member to only your state, but within lovely Wisconsin I would look at:

A-LIST KENNELS - Denise Kamine and Chelsea Kamine-Neitzel, (262) 389-8870, dkamine1@aol.com, A-List Kennels

ABADIE - Barbara Lankford, (920) 649-0069, barlank@aol.com

I would also consider:

ELEMENT - Denise Kusey, (262) 391-4819, denisekusey1@aol.com, Element Dobermans: Breeder of Quality Dobermans

MOA DOBERMANS - Margarita B Files, (262) 893-6284, moadobes@earthlink.net, MOA Dobes, Dobermans, Chinese Cresteds, Wisconsin
Recommended Wisconsin breeders from a different thread, given by Kansadobe.

Good luck in the search!
Where are you located? how far are you willing to travel? what kind of puppy are you looking for?

I was looking at HQ Dobermans awhile back, they're in St. Cloud, WI. It doesn't seem like they breed all that often, but just had a litter in May with one of Barb Lankford's dogs. Their website is out of date, so it's probably best to try to contact Laurel directly. I would try giving her a call, because while she does answer emails, they were normally very short and I found she didn't always answer all my questions. Seems like they have a good program, but I never finished all my research since my husband ended up having some health issues and getting a pup was put on hold.

HQ Dobermans

I really liked Barbara Lankford though. She answered all my questions, even though I told her I was only doing research. When the time comes, I will more than likely go back to her to get my next pup.

Why do titles matter? I'm not planning on showing or competing. I do however want the pup to be from health tested and OFA'ed parents.

This is just what I've noticed, but it seems people who invest the time and money into titles do their best to make sure the dobermans they breed are as healthy as possible. By that I mean breeding to standard and doing the testing to try to limit the genetic problems this breed has.

This exactly.

Titles on a dog is PROOF that the dog is built correctly and/or that they are able to do the job that they are bred to do. If you don't want to show or do anything but just have a simple companion than you don't really need to worry about any sort of working title. However, a dog that has it's AKC championship means that it is structurally correct. Dogs that are born from structurally correct parents are more likely to be structurally correct whereas dogs that are born from parents with structural issues are much more likely to have structural issues. A dog that is not build correctly has more stress on the bones and joints and will have a harder time doing even simple tasks (running, jumping, playing, etc) and may face problems due to structural issues as they age. Also, getting legitimate titles is hard work regardless of the venue, being able to obtain them proves that the dog has the nerves needed when under pressure (often there's other dogs, spectators, lots of sounds and things going on at competitions and shows).

If I am paying for a companion that will be with me for years I want that animal to come from somebody who legitimately loves the breed. To me this means that the person is doing more than just breeding - they're competing, attending events, etc.

Because they show that the breeder was willing, open, and humble enough to seek the opinions of other experts, on the quality of the animals they are using to produce the next generations.

Titles? They show that the breeder was out there, looking at what else is out there, comparing, keeping up-to-date with current information available thru discussing with other breeders and competitors. The social pressure to keep current with all available health testing is beneficial to the breed, and to that breeder's dogs.

They show that the breeder wanted to know if their dog had what it takes, to hold up to change, to athletic challenges, to mental challenges, to training, to handling themselves with calm demeanor in a crowd of both two-and-fourleggeds.

In short, that's exactly the type of dog that makes the best, most enjoyable pet, for someone who wants "just a companion."

There are puppies out of nearly every litter from titled parents, that are placed as "just a companion."

Good luck in your search, and ask to be shown "the walk," don't accept just "the talk."

Another important thing to consider on the titles front, particuarly the conformation aspect, is that structurally sound really IS cheaper. Trust me. I love my dogs with all my heart. They are both rescues. Mac was/is NOT structurally sound. The product of a very poor breeding program, no doubt. In her first year of life we spent in excess of 5 grand dealing with a hip defect that caused a SUBSTANTIAL injury. Surgery, physical therapy, and a great deal of pain and suffering to her. Not to mention the time spent doing and dealing with all of these things.

I do not purchase dogs, but that's my personal opinion for a myriad of reasons. IF I were to do so, however, it darn sure would come from parents who have been critiqued by objective experts to determine that they were fit. Pretty doesn't cut it. I would want documentation, and the conformation title is one way to get that.

I have now heard three different female names associated with this breeder. It is odd. I was in line to buy a dobe from them and I don't know if I am going to.

There were some much better recommendations made in the thread, i'd avoid broken oaks and go with one of the others listed
