Whelping boxes?

I need a new whelping box. The one Patrick built for us out of wood was very nice, but was very heavy and is of course now burned!

I'm thinking of buying a dura whelp. Anyone have one of these? We had one long ago when they first came out - it was a sample we were given from Ray Allen. Back then, it seemed kind of flimsy, but I hear they have improved much over the years. They are just a bit pricey, so I would love opinions before taking the plunge.

Otherwise, I am open to suggestions for other kinds or materials to build out of besides very heavy wood. Since we don't have litters very often, it is stored in the barn attic and it's hell getting it up there

I don't want suggestions for kiddie pools, I think they are too flimsy and don't give the bitch much of a secure feeling with how open they are. And of course, I am too lazy to do a search, so help please?

Whelping box

Lorna - I went to home depot and got 8 of the coated wire shelfs like the are using so much in closets now. I love it. It is so easy to set up and take down.

I have 4 of the kid mats rubber squares on the floor then put a tarp over that and then the wire frame which I used cable ties to hold together. Then I have my whelping pads on top of the tarp. Very easy to clean, take down, put up and I can block off half of the square for the first couple weeks til the puppies get bigger so that they do not get too far away from Momma.

I love it. I have 4 tarps and can put them up for clean and put down a fresh one each time I change the bed.

I love the dura whelp boxes, I forked out myself to buy one for a local rescue organization for emergencies and preggo-drop-offs. So far its been great, easy to keep clean and a good size for the two staffordshire bull terriers and the golden retriever that have needed it thus far.

It really does store back up in its handy storage box, so its out of the way when not in use, even the Extra Large. Its not that much of a pain to get it in and out of its storage place.

Mine is made of Plywood sides and a 2X4 'pig' rail. I can carry it myself no problem. I washed it and re painted it between each use. I have had it for many years. 4 years since my last litter and It still hangs off a few nails in one of my sheds. SO many memories I just hate to burn it. Last paint job was PURPLE!!!!

I think you can get creative with plywood- definitely not heavy at all. Its very simple to build actually. The Dura Whelp appears to be way too massive and seems like it would be hard to store if you are already tight on space (you don't breed often?). I just enjoy building things, since you can get creative with wood. If I were anywhere near you- I would build one for you since your an awesome breeder!

Dura whelp massive? Not at all! Very light weight and fold right back into the box it comes in for storage.

I'm old fashioned. I had a carpenter custom make a plywood whelping box for me years ago. I have yet to see anything that came near to what I have. It is made according to what I wanted. I've seen many boxes.

I think when it all comes down to it; you have to design one that customly fits what you want.

I put a tile floor in the bottom of the box on top of the plywood. I like that because I can easily disinfect the floor though I do not leave the floor bare with the babies.

I use to customize carpet for the box (indoor outdoor). But I think that next time, I may try that put together rubber mat stuff commonly sold in hardware stores.

The entry for the bitch folds down half way. I had it done with piano hinges. This way she walks in without jumping etc. When the puppies get bigger it goes up and they, for awhile, do not escape.

So I don't know; its all in what one likes or wants. Mine sits on its side in the garage and hasn't been used in years. It still in excellent condition.

I think the wood is warmer. Just my thoughts.

I absolutely LOVE the Dura Whelp. I have the biggest one - plenty of space for everyone. They hold up very well, are super easy to keep clean and fold right back up and then back into the box. Does not use much storage space at all.

Ditto! I LOVE mine so easy to clean and bleach, folds up flat and fits anywhere. I got sick of the heavy wood and the pups seemed to chew on the wood box.

Mine weighs a ton and is big at 4' x 6' but I love it! Just set it up yesterday for the approaching big day next week. We used the laminated white board (forget what it is called but they make cabinets out of it), but do not have a bottom on it so it is just 4 sides that we can easily take apart - I use pvc hangers and 2" pvc pipe for the pig rails - easy to remove. I set it on a piece of remnant linoleum. My husband made it for me.

This picture was taken 2 years ago - the dining room now has wood floors and I covered almost all of it with a piece of linoleum this time.

OOOH! This is sooo nice! I especially love the artwork

You all have been so helpful, thank you. I think I am leaning towards the Dura Whelp, but the plywood is tempting too! Okay, no help at all!

But, since we happen to have 5 sheets of plywood just sitting here, how do those of you with this type of box find it to clean? What type of paint or surface do you put on it? The thing that is most holding me back from having Patrick build the plywood box, is the worry about keeping it clean. I know the Dura Whelp can be wiped down and disinfected easily, right?

Suzan - with your wire one, do you leave the sides open, or is that what you are covering with the tarp? I'd be afraid of a pup getting stuck in the wire - is that a concern at all? I also really want a nice secure, den like feeling to it for the bitch. She has her own whelping room, but dogs like dens.
And how do you clean all of those individual bars of wire? I hate cleaning ex-pens as it is! LoL! But it sounds nice and light weight. Do you have a photo to share?
Time is getting short, as I like my girls getting used to it at least 2 weeks prior and we only have a little over 3 left, so I have to get something this week - nothing like waiting until the last moment!

Diva is SOOOO huge! There's either more than 6 pups in there or they are all big males.

The pig rails are to stop the bitch from laying on pups. So if a pup is against the side wall, the rail is above the pup so if the bitch lays downs she would not lay on top of the puppy and smash it. Hope that makes sense

My breeder uses something very similar - probably just an older version of the DuraWhelp - as someone who has had to clean one several times... I LOVE them.

Before the actual welping, I usually use Clorox 2 spray cleaner. I especially use it on the floor. The floor is tile so that works quite well.

As to the wood sides. I've never loaned out my box and never had a problem. But this is usually what I do:

Work it is but it works.

I go over it lightly with sand paper and smooth it out. Then I wipe it down with the same Clorox formula.

I do this a few days before whelping. Prior to that I have cleaned it and allowed the bitch to sleep there.

Funny I had a real false pregnancy bitch once that did not want to give up that box. She hated it when she was returned to the crate. They can really strech out in there and it is nice and warm.

My box is 4 x 4 by the way. I have seen the longer version but for me I like this because it is warm. At least that is the size of carpet I put inside when I did it that way. I don't like any drafts so I made it that way size wise.

For those with Durawhelp

do you have a Large or Xlarge?

I love Mary Jo's whelping box!

That is what I have and I LOVE mine! I also ordered the pads made to fit....kind of sheepskin with rubber backing that stays in the box. I also have the heater unit that is like a heat lamp but the "bulb" is ceramic. It gives off heat but no light. The stand is specially made for the whelping box with a foot that fits under the box to keep the lamp from tipping over.

I use the x-tra large for the whippets too!
