Natural ears from reputable breeder

question, If a buyer wants their dog to have natural ears, do reputable breeders allow that or will they only sell their dogs cropped? I'm asking bc a friend really likes Moose and has expressed interest in a Doberman but said she would want natural ears... will she be wasting her time or upsetting certain breeders by even asking this?

Kathy Davieds of Jesaran dobermans in VA is incredibly well regarded for her dogs' health, longevity, temperament, and show potential. She has the most accomplished natural eared male in the US right now, I think. Anyway, you can find her contact info on the dpca.org website. She sells both cropped and natural puppies and will ship if your friend isn't in the area.

Very few reputable breeders will sell a puppy uncropped. There are a few reasons for that. First, Most puppies are graded for show or pet quality at about 8-10 weeks which is after they are cropped. A breeder does not want to inadvertently place a show puppy in a pet home as it would be a detriment to their breeding program not keeping or placing the best pups in show homes. Second, most prefer cropped ears and if a puppy or dog is returned to the breeder for whatever reason it will be much easier to place him or her in a new home if the ears are cropped. Third, breeders often feel that every puppy they produce should reflect the breed standard (viewed as c/d breed), breed type, and what they strive to produce, therefore many will not budge. Here are a few other topics on the subject; it has been well covered here. Rescue is always a great option for those who prefer natural ears and do not want to search high and low and encounter dead ends with 99% of inquiries.

If your friend wants a natural eared pup, she needs to be prepared to wait, as there are VERY few reputable breeders that will sell a natural eared puppy. The US standard is for a cropped and docked dog. Kathy Davieds is one of the only good breeders I know that is willing to leave a puppy uncropped. There are very few others. Her waiting list is long, so your friend needs to be patient. Kathy breeds lovely dogs (my boy is sired by one of her dogs).

Her other option is to form a good relationship with a reputable rescue. Rescues occasionally get a pregnant bitch or a litter of pups. Typically those puppies are placed from waiting lists the rescue has in place, so she would need to be pre-approved from the rescue and ready to go when that situation arises.

I would also prefer an uncropped Doberman. I don't have anything against cropping or docking, I have a cropped/docked Doberman and cropped Dane right now and I think they look amazing. But I also think the natural eared version look amazing, and I am tired of hearing all the crazy comments from people during the posting phase.

If and when I am in the market for a Doberman puppy, I will be looking in Canada. BC has a cropping ban, and while many of the breeders come to WA for cropping, some breeders are leaving them natural.

It is difficult to find a well bred natural earned puppy. I've never sold one, but might consider it in the future (I'm not currently breeding). My first Doberman was natural earred and I liked it...... but it is still very hard to show uncropped.
I would tell your friend to really make out there puppy resume and then go searching - there are some breeders that will consider selling natural, but they are not common...... yet.
