Looking for a Breeder in Southwest Missouri

I tried to post this last night and I don't think it worked, so I'm trying again (and sorry if it did work and I just can't find it - don't mean to clutter up the site with duplicate posts).

My husband and I live in Nixa, MO (6 miles south of Springfield) and we're looking to buy a Dobe pup/dog within the next 3-6 months. We're just wanting a family pet/companion with no intentions of breeding or competing. We'd prefer a male in either black/rust or red/rust. I grew up around Dobe's (my grandparents always had 2 or 3 and my dad has had a few over the years - I've never had so much fun with any other breed of dog in my life) and I finally have a home and yard large enough to accomodate a Dobe's playfulness.

I'm hoping to find some specific breeder recommendations for the SW Missouri area if at all possible. (I've heard of Amaris and have researched enough to know that they should be avoided at all costs - really sad for the dogs they breed.) Yestereday I heard about Ozark Autumn Dobermans of Springfield; the breeder is a vet who has been breeding Dobes for 12 years and she seems to breed them specifically for family pets. Her name is Melissa Smith and she's a DVM at Town & Country Animal Hospital in Springfield. If anyone has experience with her and/or her dogs, or knows of someone who does I would greatly appreciate the feedback. Or if anyone could recommend a good, reputable breeder in the Springfield area that would be wonderful!!!!

Thanks in advance for the input,
Brigette

welcome!!

I would stay away from any breeder that breeds just for family pets. If you look in the breeder section here you're sure to find some wonderful information that might help you out!

welcome

According to their website they have dogs that are "with AKC obedience, agility, rally, CGC titles", they just don't seem to push it. Here's a link to their site...

OZARK AUTUMN DOBERMANS

They also have complete health guarentee but I'm leery of trusting the site alone. After all, according to Amaris' site they take the highest care of their dogs too and I've learned that is absolutely NOT the case.

There site is filled with nothing. Don't be impressed that their vets. theres nothing wrong with inquiring and asking questions about their experiences with the breed, and WHY they breed. Speak to as many breeders as possible and keep an info pad on your opinions and continue to do research, theres nothing wrong with widening your search along with checking out your local Dobermann clubs. welcome to the forum read up, and good luck Von.

SW Missouri

I am familiar with Ozark Autumn - I know last year for the first time she attended the UDC Natls and has started doing some showing. Being a vet does not necessarilly mean you know anything about conformation or working temperament of any dobe. I would call and talk to several breeders personally as this will give you a good feel for their program and honesty.

Welcome to the forum! You will certianly learn alot if you stick around and take the time to do some reading! It's a great place to learn

As for Ozark Autumn Dobermans: First impression, I'm not overly impressed. I wouldn't run out and buy a dog from them without seeing what else there is. They don't have any stacked photos of dogs on their site, you cant see what type of conformation they are breeding. Actually, they ONLY have one photo on their site... of their 'foundation sire', which looks like a rather old photo, although I could be wrong.
They only mention health testing for vWD, they make no mention of CARDIO (heart problem) at all on the website, and they don't mention OFA (hips and elbows certified), or CERF (eye testing for disease), or thyroid function. These are all very important tests that should be preformed on a bitch and stud dog BEFORE they procreate!
I also do not see a single dog with a registered name on the website. People with well bred dogs are eager to show off the pedigree of their dogs! If they want knowledgeable people purchasing their pups, they will let you know (without asking for it) what lines they breed. You can learn alot just by looking at the names on a pedigree
As to looking for a 'pet' dog, don't sell yourself short! Every single reputable and responsible breeder who breeds for the conformation ring or sport has puppies that aren't suited for what they intended (whether it be conformation or what have you). These puppies are then sold to families who have no intention of showing the pup. They are sold on a limited registration, BUT you are getting a dog that was bred for a purpose, who comes from good lineage, who's parents were health tested, who has longevity in their lines (average lifespan of a dobe isn't that long in most cases).
If a breeder is breeding with the intention of making a 'pet', with no regard for conformation of the dogs, what happens to the dogs that aren't good enough to make a good 'pet'????? I just think there are enough 'pet' dogs in this world, a breeder should set their sights higher and actually breed with the intention of producing a dog that is structurally sound and is an improvement on the breed.
I understand, you want a PET, and don't neccesarily want to buy a dog from a 'show' breeder, but let me tell you I've never met a more passionate person about their dogs then my breeder(s). They are amazing. They eat, sleep, breathe dog, can answer any question I have, are willing to have me over to 'hang out', help me make decisions about my dogs and my future, are happy to help me out with training issues, are always more then happy to have puppy for sleep-over's should I have to go out of town and can't find someone to care for the dogs. Also, if I should ever not be able to care for them, they would take the dogs back in a heart beat, and keep or re-home the dog. They are not even on the same plane as a 'pet' breeder. They exceed every expectation I have. They health test, health guarantee, and truly do their best to create a better doberman with each litter they produce.

some food for though: conformation is important to every dog for the simple fact that dogs with appropriate conformation are most likely to stay SOUND and have less overall problems with joints, etc. A dog that is bred with poor proportions is, right off the bat, much more likely to develop hip displasia, elbow displasia, arthritis, joint wear, etc.

Anyways, hope this isn't too heavy for you, I just want to encourage you to seek out the best you can find, and not settle for someone who 'just breeds pets'. Have fun and good luck puppy hunting!

I agree with Panama. Check with Old Drum. She actually just had puppies yesterday, I can't say what or if she has anything available but as many as she had it wouldn't hurt to ask. You'll get a nice puppy with full health testing on the parents. She is near Warrensburg MO. Go to Home

Hope you don't mind Ali......

Wasn't Jana showing one of the Ozark Autumn puppies at the Nashville show? I specifically noticed because it was sired by the same dog I bred to a couple of times.

Yes I am showing Katrina (2 yrs old). She is sired by Ch Durke's Bubba Just Moved In. the owners name is Leigh Ann Honeycutt. She is not the breeder. I know nothing about the Ozark Autumn Dobermans other than Katrina and her sister who are both decent bitches. Leigh ann would very much like to make Katrina a champion.

The daughter of the Ozark Autumn dobermans is also doing quite well in the ring with her bitch. We have been trying to help her learn to show better. She went WB both days last weekend and does a very good job. She is also doing some obedience with her girl and went for her CGC over the weekend. The people are very nice. Having bred to the champion male they did I think they are trying to improve their stuff. they do health testing but thats about all I know about their dogs. I have known the people for years. They finally have some decent dogs that they are doing some winning with in the ring. I hope they are learning to do things right. I can not reccomend them as breeders as I do not know their dogs other than the two they are showing.

brw1982 I too want a " pet " but I want it to be the best looking, smartest and live a long life. The best odds I have if getting my pet will be from a breeder who does all the right things, knowing what she breeding, health testing and all the other important things that a a breeder who cares about Dobermans do. look long and hard and read and learn here. I have waited forever for my time to get a doberman and I want her to be with me and be healthy and happy as long as she can be.

I agree - our Dobe needs to be healthy first of all. I'm not rushing out to find the first one I can. We've been reading up on the breed and preparing for a while and we've only begun our search recently. We don't want just any Dobe, we want the right Dobe for us.

I've been speaking with Ali of Old Drum Dobermans and they seem fantastic but we're still talking to other breeders as well. Does anyone have any thoughts on J Bar S Dobermans out of the Kansas City area?

Old Drum is on this site and I read only good things. JbarS is also on this site and IMO is ok too.Stay with Breeders who are doing the right things and you will find your puppy. I know that there are some good Breeders here in TX but my baby(Ihope) is in PA.Never know until they get here!! Also there are some pretty slick web sites just careful and ask on here someone will answer you. Good Luck

Yeah, I've found that many shady breeders represent themselves as otherwise on their sites. I started my search looking for local breeders (Springfield, MO) but I've narrowed my list now to DPCA recommended breeders. I'm willing to travel a bit in order to find the right puppy.

I do have a "kinda" rescue dobe. I got him when he was 8mos old he is 7 now and no amount of money could take him from me.Of course I don't know much of his history ,he does have thyroid problem but medication takes care of that, otherwise he has been healthy. He is a big pretty red boy,I love him so much and of course I had him neutured. You would not believe the people that tried to get me to breed him, NO NO NO not for money or puppy or anything. I thank God I got so lucky with him.

We JUST got our little Gotham from Ali @ Old Drum Dobes.

I can't say ENOUGH good things about her.

She is supportive, answers ALL of my questions, LOVES her dogs, does TONS of health testing and is very active with them.

Gotham is from her Prezley x Sterling litter and he is GREAT!

They finally have some decent dogs that they are doing some winning with in the ring. I hope they are learning to do things right. I can not reccomend them as breeders as I do not know their dogs other than the two they are showing.
Thanks JDD. In a round about way, you are giving me a compliment if you are talking about Max as the dog they bred too. I am the co-breeder on Max (Ch Durke's Bubba Just Moved In) He is a nice dog and has a very nice pedigree. I bred his dam Lilly, Ch Gorrmae's Lilly N' Red, who lived to 11 1/2 and was lost to cancer, but she was dx with heart pvc's at 11.

The people that bred her to Kurt, Ch Wendorf's Phenomonen (Max's sire) are the sweetest, most, caring people you could meet, but are as ignorant as they come to the proper etiquette of breeding dogs. They were supposed to put my kennel name on Max and any dog shown, but because they were oblivious to the what was in their contract with me, kennel named the litter Durke (after a beloved dog of there's that they had owned). That was their one and only litter of Dobermans that they ever bred, so I let it slide and signed the papers anyway. (they got Lilly for a song, and I actually helped them finish her, through a friend, as they did not have a clue or the finances to do it!)

They sold Max (at 4 months old) to someone Jackie Wendt (now I love Jackie, and she is a great person as well as a great breeder, but I believe she was trusting also) referred them to Cindy Storz. Cindy has done well with Max, but has never been totally truthful with me, or about me!......for example she acquired a beautiful show bitch, (for free, nada, nothing, no money exchanged!!!!) on co-ownership with/ and from me, and also co-owned her with her neighbor who just wanted a pet. (and where the bitch would live) and Cindy would be responsible for her show career.
A wonderful home, but the bitch loosened a tooth, cause she was in a wire crate and she hooked the tooth on the wire of the crate, and she practically pulled it out..the puppy was around 6 months old when this happened..(Cindy) is telling people she couldn't finish because she had this missing tooth, (had nine pts), and said she couldn't get majors on her. .... (btw a well known handler, and now a judge saw her and told me that she was a pretty bitch, but why did I let her go there?)...my first clue...
Well, she is telling people that it cost her $1400 to try to save the tooth, (in reality it cost her less than $400 to try to save it, by having it pulled!) BUT!!!

The thing that got me is she is telling people that the puppy lost the tooth in transit from me to her, which is a lie, cause I met Cindy in Coldwater, Mi myself and she took possession of her then, at 11 1/2 wks old! (still having a full mouth of mostly "baby teeth"!)
(someone told me that is what she told them!)

She bred her to Max once, and I couldn't take a puppy at the time so I told her maybe if she breeds her next time, I could. (sigh, never happened..)

I signed the papers and when I marked limited on the males, (2 bitches, 6 males) she went and somehow got one of them changed by AKC (AKC never contacted me), and she sold that pup as a pet to someone on this forum and they were supposed to let Cindy use that pup for breeding if she wanted to use him..... and all I can say is I got bamboozled... I am not proud to say this, as I try my dardest to "read people"!
I have gotten a lot more "distrusting" of dog people than I used to be!
The tongue lies, but the heart tells the truth! iow, "actions speak louder than words!!!" I hope all the new people looking for a puppy, will be aware of that for theirs and the puppys sake...

Wow. There are so many things to be careful of as a breeder. Just a question for all breeders here on DT. Would it be prudent to photocopy all completed AKC registrations and have the future puppy owners sign some sort of document stating they are aware of the Limited restrictions on said puppy? This way if they tried to edit the documents you could send in the letter along with the original registration to the AKC?

What do some of you do to ensure this can't happen? Would making sure you as the breeder are the one sending in the documents be a way of ensuring they can not register any puppies if they break the contract?

And hey....if you are ever stuck with looking for show home to send a red girl to for free just let me know the pickup date! I've been taking handling classes ya know!

Believe me Reds after meeting you and see how you love and take care of your dogs, that would not be an impossibility if I was financially able to do it....

You have a point as to making photocopies of the papers, but because the AKC lets people register online, that wouldn't do much good, cause if the contract signed doesn't stop them, then...well you get the idea...

Just one side note, regarding Max. I inquired to Cindy to breed to him (a dog I co-bred and bred his dam), and she said I could for only $850 (in 2006), no deals for me!!!! And this was AFTER she got Jasmine from me for FREE!

Anyway in regards to this deal, Cindy was co-owner and co-breeder legally by AKC standards, and at that time I did not know of all this hallabaloo she was telling people regarding the bitch I "gave" her....she is the one that changed it when she got the papers back from me, normally I would have forwarded them back to AKC but she said they had to be signed by the other gal, (the neighbor that actually raised Jasmine), so me like a dummy believed her and that is when she changed the Limited box. (but she did call me and tell me that I marked one of the show puppies papers when it shouldn't have been marked Limited, she told me it was one of the bitches). (I know I did not mark the bitches on limited!!)
This will never happen again, cause first all I am going send in the reg papers myself, meaning the new owners will sign the papers in front of me, and pay the $20 registration fee, and name the dog (with my Kennel name of course), BUT I WILL MAIL THEM!!! !
This is a note to ALL breeders. In the case of someone getting the puppy registration application and the limited box is marked, then it should be punched out with a hole punch!!!! So no one can change it...cause sometimes if someone can see what the code is under the blacked out box, they can register it with full registration "over the internet", and AKC is not aware of it!!!! (cause the Limited Box has a code number in it, that if left there tells AKC that dog is on full reg or at least not checked off Limited).
I really don't like the idea of registering dogs or litters over the internet....just for that reason. And unless your kennel name is registered and you sign the papers that it is, anyone can change that too....especially if it is a show puppy and hasn't been shown yet, another good reason it would behoove breeders to send the papers in themselves.
When dealing with these precious babies, just trusting someone to do the right thing anymore, just does not cut it!!!!!

Hey! Good to see you here! This is Jess, the member of the RKC that you were referred to. I really do hope you continue to talk to Ali, she's lovely. It's my understanding that J Bar S has some dobes more geared toward working than showing. I consider them a little "high octane" for what I like, but I like a couch potato personally. <grin> Ali's dobes aren't all couch potatoes, but I'm sure she has some that have their own permanent butt imprint on the cushions!

In my opinion, I prefer dobes from show lines as they may not necessarily be as high drive. Some are, and they make great working dogs, but many are more willing to run for an hour a day, do some training and plop down to watch some TV. That's how Wonder is, and that's what I prefer.

Whatever you choose, I wish you luck, and keep in touch! We could get the kiddos together to play!

Hey Jatango - thanks for the welcome. I actually just emailed Ali and we've decided to adopt a red girl from her. We're really excited. We just got the best feeling from talking to her and some other breeders were kind of rushed in talking to us. She seems to really care about her dogs and they are just absolutely beautiful!!!! I agree with you about appreciating a dog who can make their own butt imprint on the sofa! We're fairly active but it's also nice to relax sometimes - I don't need a dog that's a personal trainer! Just looking for a really amazing pet.

That would be a lot of fun to schedule some play dates. I actually grew up about 30 minutes southish from Ft Wood. How many Dobes do you have?
