I have not yet found one

Hello everyone

I have owned two doberman's in my life and both were great. I am now 30 with a family of my own and would like to get another one.

We have two cats (One is deaf), twin boys that are turning 5 in november, clean brand new 2014 stick built house (Closing next week yay) with a fenced yard in a tract subdevision, you know the ones with small lots.

Anyway I had my first one when I was 1 yearsold and my dog took care of me and was my best friend until we had to put her down when I was 12.

I know a lot about the breed and what is needed to take good care of the dog. The problem is, that I can not seem to get ahold of any of the breeders around my area. We will be lving in Redmond Oregon. I plan to get a pup in the spring of next year and am looking at doing this now to get on a waiting list as I have been told that is the best chance I have at getting one.

So here are the breeders I have been considering. If anyone has any info on them, PLEASE share.

http://www.sunsetdobe.com/

Sunset dobermans is my second choice and I AM on a waiting list with them as of right now. They have my family information and my background with the breed. I do not see anything wrong with them. However, If anyone has any experience with them please post.

My first choice is Foxfire Dobermans - Breeder-Owner of AKC Top Producing Doberman Pinschers

Although I liked their website and such, the issue I am having with Foxfire is that No one is getting back to me. I have left 2 messages on the answering machine in the past 5 months, one of them being last week. The second issue is I filled out the contact us forum on foxfire's website and left my number on there. I have yet to hear anything back at all.

I want a good pup. I DO NOT want a do it yourself back yard breeder that is a puppy mill as I call it.

If anyone has ANY more info or good/ bad reviews on any breeders in my state or has ANY advice for me, please share. I am desperate to find the perfect dog for my family and for myself. I have wanted another dog for the past 10 years and next spring is the perfect time to get that little bundle of joy back into my working man life. Any other recommendations on breeders here or in washing please let me know. This pup is not going to be a show dog. I DO want the breeder to be apart of all of the AKC registeration stuff and my dog MUST come with papers.

Maximum Budget $2000 with cropping/docking/dueclaws included (please note that my wife is not pleased at the pricing but is willing to look the other way because she has been outvoted by my twins and me. We can not spend more then that, cheaper is always a good thing. Sunset wants $1800)

Lastly, Please post on when I do find a reputible breeder, what I need to ask. I am new to purchasing a dobie (My parents bought my last two with me being so young/not there. I need to know what kinds of health questions I should ask among other things. I am a newbie to purchasing, good handler after I get my companion.

Thank you

James

Also

I need to know what types of ear cropping there is. My dobie had a different crop then the ones on sunset has. Her ears were shorter. I would like that if possible.

My Personal preference would be a show dog that I have as a pet

Sunset is Dawn Danner. She does extensive health testing, has been around for quite awhile, and as far as I know has a good reputation. Dawn is an AKC judge, President of the Mt Hood Doberman Club, part of ALBA Medical's veterinary division... yada, yada, yada. Read the About Us page on her website.

I don't know her personally, but I did research her awhile back for a friend in the area looking for a Dobe puppy. (she ended up going with a rescue).

Personally, if I had left 2 phone messages for a breeder and filled out their puppy application, and not heard back, I would go elsewhere. I know people are busy, but 5 months? It only takes a moment to send off an email or a quick phone call. JMO

If anyone can help, please do so. I know I have quite a bit of time but I would like this settled soon.

As far as sunset, They have won awards and I believe they do extensive testing. Please correct me if I am wrong. Thank you.

Ok so some more news about this. Yesterday I talked to dawn at sunset dobermans and the chances of getting a puppy from her next year is slim to none due to her wait list being bigger and us being at the bottom.

So here we are again back to the drawing board. Foxfire has still not gotten back to us. Sunset will not have any puppys for us. So now what does my Family and I do? Rogue River Dobermans has no information about them in the About Us section and that makes me weary. I have yet to try the other listed. I will try today. If anyone has has any info on any other reputable breeders in Oregon or Washington even, please let me know. Also if anyone has any more info on Rogue River or Heartwood please get at me.

Have you tried calling Foxfire? When I was looking I emailed her and got a response the next day (but my email was very detailed, explaining why I was contacting her, my plans for the pup, my living situation and career, and dog experience). What did your email say?

We chatted on the phone as well. I ended up going with a local breeder but it was easy to contact her. Have you tried calling her for info?

I did get a hold of foxfire today and did speak with michelle on the phone. She was very informative and does plan to have puppies next spring. However there is no guarentee that we will be able to get a puppy from her as it depends on the litter.

My family is looking for a female black/tan. Because we are so specific there is a chance that her litter may or may not have a female to sell to us so its up in the air. However, we are on her radar.

I wil say also that she is on the high point of our budget (About 500 over) but if need be, we would be willing to get one anyhow. I got ahold of rogue river and they are on the lower end of the price spectrum (1200 for a boy, 1500 for a girl). Still unsure about the breeders and only can go by what they all tell me. All in all they all seem to do the testing for the breed and are very knowledgeable . Anyone with any more info on the breeders above, let me know. Ill be calling Heartwood next and see what they have to say. This is getting more and more harder to decide on who to go with/get a puppy from then I ever imagined.

if you have an opportunity to get a Foxfire puppy, even if it means waiting, i would absolutely wait for one. if anything, it'll give you time to save up to meet her price as well as to put money in the bank for an emergency fund.

We are leaning towards it. Money is no object for me when it comes to a dobie. My dobie when I was a kid would grab my pants and pull me away from the street even if I so much as looked like I would go towards if. Even if my mom was next to me picking weeds out of the garden.

Her name was Erica. She even once stood infront of me and growled at a bully who wasnt very nice to me without any command or anything. Other then that, she was very loving, kind, and nie to everyone. This is what I want for my twins. If I have to pay a primium price for it then so be it. The wife isnt to pleased but I have around 10 months to get her to ok it .

Tax season has been good to us every year so we already have a backup fund for the dog just in case the worst happens. I guess we now just have to wait and hope that a b/ack/tan girl comes out that she will be willing to sell to us. Here is to hoping . Other breeders in the area are again, knowledgeable and I dont see anything wrong with getting a a second opinion but foxfire is my #1 choice still. Anymore info on the breeders listed above would be greatly appriciated. Thank you everyone for your help. Now if only the next 7 months could go by quickly.

Many of us waited a long, long time for our pups. It is worth the wait I'm sure you would be VERY happy with a Foxfire pup! I was in the same situation as you with my breeder and the posibility of 'not getting a pup from the litter' and it was something I had to be okay with. She dosen't know how many of each color/gender/pet/show she is going to get. The wait will be worth it!

To me right now, it appears that if it is in next spring's cards then it will happen. The perfect little female will come up and we will have a new addition to our small family. If not, we will wait. If we happen to find a reputible breeder other then foxfire then we will consider it at the appropriate time.

That is where you all come in. I have given the names of every breeder that was listed on the website given to me. More information would be helpful. I just hope my boys and I will get our puppy next spring. Thanks for the information guys and lets keep it coming.

Have you contacted any Washington breeders as well? There are a handful of great breeders there too. Starlainek9 is one you might try to PM her here on DT to see if she knows what's planned with her or other breeders in the PNW. You can contact your local DP club too.

I'm loving my Delmira Doberman, she's an awesome family dog and easy on the eyes as well. I would recommend them as they do testing and also work and show their dogs to the extent that having young kids at home to care for allows.

I feel they have a good eye and a good intuition about how a dog will meet the family needs of those who get them. She's in So. Cal but her heart is in OR. Maybe giving her a good excuse to travel there would tip the scales in your favor of being approved for one of her pet prospects. (if everything else is in order, that is)

I have two Foxfire bitches living in my home right now.

Michelle is very hard to get a hold of these days due to being the DPCA president and taking care of her own breeding program. Generally she's much easier to get a hold of during mid week. Glad you were able to finally speak with her. When "you're part of the family" she'll be easiest to get a hold of by text.

Can't remember what her prices are these days but you might be a bit low at your high mark. Hopefully she discussed that with you. Her priority for puppy homes are generally repeat owners and proven show homes so that may be why she can't tell you if she'll have anything available out of the upcoming litters.

I'll second whomever said waiting for a pup is well worth it. I waited 6 months for one of mine to be born. Then agonized for weeks to determine if there was one for me in her litter. I will say that it seems that most of Michelle's dogs are a bit on the higher drive side. As in, a romp in a small back lawn isn't going to be enough. They aren't exactly couch potatoes...so if that's not what you're looking for you might want to make that clear to her. Buddha and Silas came from her program so she knows how to pick the calm ones. LOL

I've posted lots of pix here. Do a search for Siri or Hottie and they should come up.

I have not yet tryed other breeders in other states. Closer means I would be able to visit the parents and the breeders. Father away states means I may not be able to do that. We are planning to go to California next year around the may but I still would like to keep my options on the breeders specified here in Oregon.

Foxfire is our choice and can confirm that they are the ones we will go through if we are given the chance next year. Hopefully

The reviews are great and they seem to know what they are doing. As far as Heartwood and other breeders, no one seems to know about them at all except Sunset. Sunset is out because she will not have a puppy for us next year due to us being so low on the list. We are willing to wait (Hence why we are waiting till next year. Thats in what feb. is 7 months, march is 8 and so on). Any more info is appriciated. I just do not relish the idea of taking a two to five days to travel out of state to "look" at puppies and parents and then have to turn back around and come home. If we were to do that hear, a day trip to portland would be cool for my twins and we would do other things, look at foxfire and then come home. Any other information about the other breeders listed, please post.

Good luck! We waited 9 years and ended up going cross-country but with good references from dog people we know first hand. :-)

I personally have been waiting for well over 4 years now. I like to go to the breeder, see the parents, the puppies and living conditions of both, as well as the breeders themselves.

Foxfire seems our best bet as of right now. If anyone has any other breeders or any recommendations from washington OR California please let us know here. We do not mind lookng at others. If time and jobs permit, we would go so far as to maybe go to washington or California but we would need to take our vacations to get a puppy. I am not saying we wouldnt do that but if we could find a reputible breeder here in oregon (Foxfire being one), one that we can actually visit then that is our first choice.

I have listed other breeders and no one seems to know anything about any of them besides sunset and foxfire. Any more info would be appriciated. Thank youi. I have yet to get a hold of Heartwood.

I know Juanita from Heartwood. I did some ads for her earlier in the year. I don't know much about her breeding program other than she has bred to a few Foxfire dogs. Michelle has handled some of her dogs on occasion.

I don't know what her plans are. She should be easy to get a hold of via email. She is very nice.

Just an FYI-I'm in TX and my dogs are from Foxfire in OR. Sometimes a breeder you click well with isn't always in the same state. Keep your options open. There are lots of breeders who have bred to Foxfire dogs.

Here's our baby girl -

I just looked at their website. I know nothing about them. What does concern me is this title under their puppies section

All puppies from this litter will be VWD Carriers only

Never mind my previous question. I got confused and am used to its normal name not the letters.

You say that they do extencive testing? What testing do they do? I know foxfire's website has all sorts of information like them being DPCA judges and stuff like that. Just curious and am calling them right now. Thanks for the info!

You might also try contacting Faye Strauss at Sherluck. I know she doesn't currently have a litter, but she may be able to direct you to someone reputable who does or is expecting sooner. Faye is awesome.

"Carrier" status wouldn't concern me much unless you are planning to breed, and even then, there are clears out there. Some websites are way out of date so it does you good to talk to the people themselves and ask them to point you towards the test results for their dogs. Dobequest, OFA, etc. and any paper reports that aren't online as well.

Hello all

I spoke with Heartwood today. Her waiting list is again extensive just like Sunset's is. She is a great and nice person . Everyone on the list has been. So now we are on two wait lists as well as actively speeking with Foxfire.

We filled out the puppy application form tonight with Foxfire. At the moment I dont think there is anything else we can do but wait. Apperently everyone wants a black/tan female. Not sure why but I just want one because that is what I always had.

Just the luck, me picking the most popular coler/sex lol. The wife and I have talked all of this over and made the decision on these top three for next spring. ((Please note that Heartwood may or may not do a winter litter, winter meaning they will arrive in the spring))

We can not get a puppy any sooner then next spring. Just saying. If we could I would get one right now.
Foxfire is still our first choice

Second and third are even with Heartwood and Sunset. Sunset told me that we will probably not get one.

So we have three top breeders (My opinion correct if I am wrong) who we are all on the wait list for. As time gets closer I will keep you all updated. If anyone has any other breeders we should contact, let us know.

We will not be breeding at all. We would like the dog to be fixed before we get her. Also yes, we are stuck on black/tan. The other colors are nice however, a dobie to me/the wife will always be the original black/tan as we think that is its signiture color. This is only an opinion though so no offence here. I do like the fawn color too.

((Please note that my family will NOT buy from a puppy mill/Back yard breeder. No offence but we do not want to take any risks that may harm the dog or the family members thank you))
