I was lurking around the doberman Instagram page, as usual, and I came across this particular breeder. I think they're based in the Midwest, which is no where near me so they aren't really a breeder I'd research.
However I looked around their site a bit and the one thing I didn't like is that they recommend ear cropping in case you ever need to "resell or rehome" your dobe. you'd get a "better value" with a cropped dog. but they don't offer the ear cropping included in the price of their pup?
reputable, or no?
Nike, one of their bitches, had a litter in early November after only earning her CGC. Also, they want to give their buyers tips so that if it doesn't work out they can better rehome them? Uhh... Perhaps they need a better screening process or at least offer to take those poor puppies back.
I have read their website and do see the part where they recommend ear cropping. I also know that they request that if you can't keep the dog they will assist with rehoming the dog and request that you do not turn over to a shelter or rescue. I know they offer a 12 month health guarantee, a 3 year cancer guarantee, a 3 year dysplasia guarantee and a replacement guarantee when shipping. Do you know of anyone with firsthand experience with this breeder? I am just curious why you consider them a bad breeder, we are currently researching breeders close to us and this is one of them. Looking for some concrete input that can help with a decision. Please note that we are looking for a pet, we do not show or compete with our dogs. Thank you!
I'm not seeing all the information you speak of, but do the do the three cardio tests? Do they check their dogs vWD status, thyroid, cerf the eyes, OFA the hips and elbows, run a liver panel before breeding? Feel like I'm forgetting something, too. Oh, btw, the DNA cardio gene test,a negative result DOES NOT mean the dog won't develop cardiomyopathy. It's only a test for one gene of the many that contribute to the development of the disease.
Are the parents titled, a decent title like schutzhund I, II or III or IPO I, II or III? What about a conformation title, tho I doubt that one from what little I can see.
Exactly what are they doing with them besides breeding their dogs for the money the puppies will make them? Are they claiming "champion" bloodlines or, in other words, trying to ride the coattails of a good breeders hard work, planning, titling and financial investment?
You can't really, really know what your dogs are capable of if you don't do the actual trialing and/or conformation showing to have them judged by someone other than the breeders biased eyes. Especially a breeder that doesn't really know what they're doing.
If I'm going to give someone my hard earned money for a doberman, you can bet it's going to be someone that puts their money, time, and effort into actually doing something with their dogs and winning titles.
Thank you for the responses! Our last Dobe, Ziva, was a rescue. She passed away 1 year ago from cancer. It was one of the hardest things I have ever been through. This time we want to get a quality bred dog that we know the background of. I am not part of the show world, so am a little naive about all of the tests to look for. I really appreciate all of the info!!
Well, and after having a dog pass away of cancer buying a quality dog with adequate health testing is something that probably hits home for you. Good luck with your search!
