| so annoyed! well, after a week of phone tag, I finally spoke with a woman who got my name from my vet. he's not a breeder vet, so I'll over look what he did, but I did find it strange that someone was trying to reach me about a stud dog. Turns out this woman has a 2 year old bitch who will be in season in august and is looking for a male to use. Didn't like the sound of it at all, so my first question to her was if her dog is registered. No, when I told her there was no one I knew who would let her use their dog with an unregistered bitch she couldn't get off the phone fast enough. Too bad, I didn't get to give my whole speel- I have her # still, might have to follow up- so bugged by these people who want to have a litter b/c their girl is so sweet or family members want a pup or god forbid, they want to make a few bucks!

It's the main reason you can pick up a horse now for less than kill buyer prices.
I have turned down seven "free" horses this Spring alone, some of them registered. Yet folks are breeding at the usual rate.
Why folks continue to think THEIR animal, regardless of species and lack of titles or other credentials, absolutely must use its reproductive organs, is beyond me.

| I know that in Georgia the economy has made the horse rescue groups work double time. The average horse owner has had a hard time paying $8- $10 for a bale of Bermuda grass hay. My horse has to eat timothy and alfalfa hay....$14 a bale! That alone has made horses in GA quite a luxury these days. The drought killed off the pastures last summer, so hay is fed year round now.
**I am very surprised that vet would give out your info to just anybody, but good for you for trying to educate the BYB novice somewhat. (Maybe give her a suggestion to get on DT and read about breeding Dobermans.) |

Some vets aren't even allowed to release vet information to rescue groups doing reference checks, although this will vary even within the same vets as the receptionists are sometimes different and have different personal policies. The owner must tell them to let them release this personal information to “x” group/person.
If my vet gave out my number to their clients and told them all about my dogs without my permission, I would be very upset. That is confidential information. You should call that vet or vet tech or whoever released this information before it happens again.

| Hey Ellenm, do you know about FHOTD ?
If not, language and snarkiness warning, but very informative regardless, and a fun ride, if you appreciate that sort of thing!

| Yeah that is surprising that the vet gave out your phone number that is doctor/client confidentiality breach, very unprofessional and the vet can get in trouble for that as well. I would be livid if my vet gave my number out like that, the professional thing to do would be the vet call you and give you the person's number so that you could call on your own

| not sure if my vet her my number or just my name, as it is extremely uncommon so it wouldn't be hard to find my number, but I will be having a chat with them. I had told them they could refer people to me looking for a dobe but not for stud purposes- gee, my boy is only 10 months old, we are a long way from even thinking of that!

| Years ago my mom's vet did the same thing to her. A lady with a horrid looking Bichon (even by today's standards where there's a "breeder" on every corner) was looking to breed her bitch. Our vet gave her my mom's number and told her that mom had a CH Bichon male.
Mom turned her down. The only litter Dini ever sired was with a bitch that was owned by Mom's mentor. That woman is no longer in Bichons, but judges Papillons, Bichons, and a bunch of other breeds in the MI area nowadays.
ellenm - Definitely check out FHOTD! It's a riot. Nothing surprises me anymore in the horse world. I think I've pretty much seen it all.
