I would raise hell and get your money back, then find a different breeder. I would never buy a dog from them even if their communication WAS good.

I urge you not to get a puppy from this breeder. His practices are sleazy to be generous. Do not fall for his now "kindly manner." Demand your money and move on.

Hey all,
Just wanted tosay we did call John again, no answer, so my BF left a message stating we longer wanted a puppy from him, so thats that ,we never heard back but as far as the deposit goes there is little chance in getting that back. Well its alot of money to lose but it could be worse. So we are going to take a break from the puppy search for a bit. Thanks for the info and the support and hopefully my mistake will educate another newbie the do's and don't s on this process.

Sorry to hear about your experience. Why don't you check the CKC for their breeder listings? Maybe you can find one in NS and go meet them in person.

My daughter is a vet student at AVC in PEI and is going to be getting a Border Terrier sometime in the next year. She found a wonderful breeder in NS and is attending a Border Terrier Specialty show in late July in Halifax. The BT people are going to be doing conformation, obedience and earth dog tests that weekend! She found the 2 breeders she called through the Border Terrier of North America breeder listings.

So, do some research and call or email a few people. If you search names on here you may find feedback in the archives.

When I was younger my wife would tell me in these situations, "Be the man."
At first that hurt a little...now I understand. When she can't get it done...I will be the biggest pain in the ASS I can.
-you've (and proably wisely from what I read) decided you no longer want a pup from him anyway.
-sit down w/your boyfriend and write on paper all the FACTS of times this guy dropped the ball on your requests (pics, calls back, etc.) (dates will help)
-have your boyfriend call and leave a mesage (no notes) with a professional/polite language (ie; sir, ma'm)--language NOT tone (he should be talking to these people like the inept breeders they are and with the anger that they took $500 from his women. (but always "sir" and stick to "facts")
-don't worry about pissing them off...they have nothing u want anyway...and you've alreay written your money off so lets see if you can get it back.
-I would tell him that you will spend 10 times the cost of his puppy to find out what legal action you have and that you will spend every minute of your waking hours of free time telling everyone who will listen about his "shady" practices...on the phone, on the internet, anywhere I can.
-call once a day...if not more leaving messages "you NEED to return OUR MONEY NOW." etc.
Don't let any once of "like" you have for this man bother you....he's playing you and has failed to do as he should in a reputable business sense let alone as a good breeder would whom cared for his dogs.
-I would even repost a thread statin something like "new pup buyers b-ware-"with his name in the titile" and again use facts to warn others...here on this web site.
STOP BEING NICE...USE PROFESSIONAL WORDS...BUT BE A PAIN IN HIS ASS!
I hope you and your guy don't take offense...I 've just been there and now I don't role over and write things off anymore. (people will use you if you do)
-go to any dobermann thread and post a warning "imo" "our experience was"
--then I'd do any of the threats I made that I could....AND NOT STOP....once he catches wind himself of you actually doing these things...you'll have your $ back (he'll lose more then your deposit from someone pushing every button they can)
--PLUS all of this is free and fun (your old man will learn he can vent his frustrations on scummy people-Ha!)...you even had a offer of lawyers help FOR FREE-DON'T DISCOUNT THAT...a titled letter alone from a lawyer..costing you nothing but a stamp and a few emails to the lawyer...would go FAR.

NovaScotia, it's your business, but I agree with faber. 500$ is a lot of money and you shouldn't let it go by. Caelestis has offered you his help and I'm sure he would at least have a few ways to help you get your money back.

If you don't do it for yourself, do it to stop this so called breeder from doing this to other people.

Please fight back, don't let him win.

I'm sorry NovaScotia.

I can only imagine how tired of this you are now, and how disheartened.

What a shame, since the whole process of getting a new Dobie puppy should have been a fun and exciting learning experience!

When you feel up to it, there seem to be a great many folks here able and willing to jump in and support you in whatever you decide--including pursuing the money back and/or getting a well-bred pup.

Ok I just had two long conversations with John Ryan, we discussed a lot of things such as the deposit. He explained like most practices with breeders or businesses deposits are meant to hold or secure your choice of item or pet that when you leave a deposit your making a final choice and therefor it is not refundable. So yes the deposit is non refundable which is our mistake. I explained that we were concerned how there was a communication gap and we had questions, he explained that he was out of the country on business and that he sometimes will make travel arrangements to deliver a pup personally. As for the not taking pics of the pup he said he does not do pics till 5 weeks because any younger "they look like a squirrel" well anyways both calls he was very upset along with his wife because of some of things people were saying on this forum ex puppy mill. John went through most of the posts and he said only one person on this thread dealt with him directly and the rest of the posts are not creditable and rumors. So I thought it only fair to post what was said in our convo and of course everyone has their opinions which I am not trying to change but since I posted the first thread about my concerns I felt the need to report what was said. Well thats my story and sorry its so long.

I do live right here in Ontario and have NO reason to lie..... I have nothing to gain by not being honest?
