Umm.. and Step One is taking $500 of your money before disclosing anything about the breeding?! Yikes.
Yes, I would most definately be concerned. I hope this works out OK for you.
Your cancelled check is your receipt. I'm with Rosamburg; I'd put on my bitch face and demand my money back NOW. I would NOT want a puppy from this person. Be sure to tell him you will contact the police so they can charge him with fraud, if he gives you any flak about the deposit being "non-refundable." You have not received anything for your payment to him. Don't let this guy walk all over you.
You will find the right puppy from the right breeder. If you can provide some excellent references, many reputable breeders ARE willing to ship puppies as long as there is good communication between both parties. But it probably won't happen overnight. Be patient, it WILL happen Good Luck!

| Really. Don't they have Z factored dogs? Anyone?
I did not take them for internet scammers though...
If I can be of assistance let me know.

| Ugh... Von Ryan is a puppy mill. I have had dealings with them before, try and get you're money back, but DO NOT buy anything from them. I don't think they are scammers though.
edit: You probably won't get your deposit back. Alot of breeders do not give their deposit back.
edit again.: Did you sign a contract? Probably no... since you live in Halifax?

| In speaking with a breeder who has shipped her dogs all over Canada she said that she has had prospective owners meet with someone in their area who does rescue or breeds and conducts an "interview" in their steed - checks out the house to ensure that a puppy would be safely contained in a yard when let out etc. etc. and if the rescue or other breeder gives the thumbs up then arrangements are made.
Anyway, it may be something for you to consider. I'd rethink my purchase from von ryansluxus (demand your money back!) and keep looking.

That's wrong, IMHO, especially if they led you to believe they have puppies now. (Just FYI, their website puppy page hasn't changed in at least a year, that pic has been up forever, and the site always says they have puppies available). You could be using this time to find a breeder (you can do much better than RL, IMHO), that will only require a deposit from you when an agreement is made that you will purchase a puppy from a particular litter at a particular time.
I'd still demand my money back. I personally would not want a puppy from these people.

| | Lil Dog | hey NovaScotia, a friend of mine just got one of john ryan's dogs, probably from the same littler. i believe the littler just got their ears cropped last friday or so and are approx 9-10 weeks old now. my friend was telling me that dogs that they ship, get sent out after their first ear posting which should be anytime now. one of the complaints that he had was that it was quite hard to get a hold of someone there and he wasnt always kept on the up and up on what was going on, but when he did get a hold of them, they always answered all his questions with no problems. my advice would be to just keep trying to call them, so you can get some kind of update. as annoining and as it is to leave you in the dark like they are, i dont believe von ryan's would "scam" you. it sounds like they just need to have better communication.

| They sometimes do not answer the calls of people who bought a dog from them, or maybe in this case a deposit. I know someone that bought a puppy from them, a couple of months later he couldn't keep him, because he was a handful. Anyways, the guy tries to contact VonRyan, but they never answered, or returned his phone calls, this has happened to alot of people who have done business from them.
