| there recently was a big discussion on the doberman club of canada web group on this topic, I honestly think the issue isn't whether we can dock or not, but that governments are removing choices, as though we don't have enough restrictions, now we can't have our dobes docked/cropped as Louis Doberman did. Shame he wasn't able to breed them to short tails.

| I am a huge fan of crop and dock. I believe it gives the doberman the doberman look.not that they wouldnt be as good of a dog with natural ears and tails....but I like the look of a doberman!
when people ask me why I would do such a thing to my dog....just for looks???? I ask them WHY they poke holes into the ears of thier daughters????? and cut of the foreskin of baby boys? if I cant make my DOG look a certain way.....because it is said to be cruel....how can they say it is ok to poke holes in a human child and chop off parts they dont want? |

| IMO, I think it goes beyond looks. I hope I can speak for most of us here that we all adore the beautifully cropped erect ears and docked tail doberman as it is especially regal, handsome, alert, but we love the doberman's personality just as much.
but I still do hope that there will always be the option of having cropped ears and docked tails doberman, so to keep the spirit of the dog which was created by herr dobermann. having an option is always good - and a buyer could always opt not to have ears cropped and tail docked. |

| No. In some countries they were not usually removed before either, for instance Germany.

| | Big Dog | Cropped ears or not a dobermann still is the same animal that it used to be. My 3 former dobis were cropped and this one has got his tail and his ears. Here in Belgium it is not allowed by law. In the beginning a lot of breeders were shouting that they wouldn't sell pups anymore. But in my opinion a true fancier whose heart lies in having or breeding dobermanns will still be loyal to the breed. |

Knock on wood Nina has yet to have one, but then I clean her ears when they look remotely gooey (she loves having her ears cleaned).
I would hate to see the crops/docks banned here.
In wild dog world there are no flopped ears for a reason iirc. |
