| | Big Pup | Danzig, Thomasina i live in maryland and am considering a doberman puppy as a family companion, protector. i will never breed or show the dog, but want a great dog nonetheless. i also only want to support a breeder that has the best interest of the breed at heart. where do i go. i could visit dozens of breeders in my area, but i am not educated enough on the subject to make a wise choice. i am sure my heart would overide my brain. that is why i joined this forum. any opinions on the above breeders? i am only going to consider breeders that get strong referrals from DT members, so steer me in the right direction please. i just joined the forum today and there is so much to consider. i am overwelmed. please any help would be great.
thanks. |

| | Big Pup | Hi There,
Have you made contact with any of the breeders listed yet?
I have a dog from Danzig. I would recommend her if you are looking for a dog that has the potential to excel at sport. The type of dog she breeds(ing) are pretty high powered, not for a first time dobe owner.
This is all just my opinion!
Good luck,
Virginia

| | Big Pup | thanks virginia,
no i have not visited any breeders yet. i am going to do my homework first. i don't want my heart to overide my brain in this quest. so a danzig dog would not be the best choice as a family companion? this will not be my first dobe, but my life has changed 180 degrees since duchess died about 5 years ago. i am now married with 2 children. i just want to take my time and get this right. we have a large fenced yard with a pool. combine that with the kids, and i am sure the dog will be kept active. i am going to keep learning as much as i can via the forum, and keep asking for advice and recomendations.
thanks,
chris

| Go to this site. Breeder Referral - Official DPCA Breeder Referral Directory
After you decide on a breeder be sure to check with us before you buy.
These are members of the Doberman Pinscher Club of America but just because they are members does not guarantee they are reputable breeders. This is a good place to start tho. |

| | Big Pup | thanks linda,
i have visited that link, but it only provides the names of breeders. i am looking for referrals for breeders that breed healthy dobes that make great family companions. i posted in the regional forums as well regarding this matter and luvmydobes put me in contact with someone at the metrpoitan baltimore DPC. she was a big help. i certainly will ask for more advice as i make my decision on a particular breeder.
thanks! |

| I hope some of the experts chime in for you soon, but in the meantime, I just wanted to give you props for doing this the right way--and choosing to support a reputable breeder.
Best luck in your quest!

| Welcome & congrats for doing your research.
FYI - There's recently been a thread called "Recommended Breeders". Have you searched through that to find breeders in your area? |

thanks. | Please be patient. I would suggest reading this forum for a few months before even starting to look at actual litters. It is important to really know WHAT you want before getting the dog. A high powered dog is ok, IF and only if, you get involved in a protection based sport such as Schutzhund. If you are considering that aspect, as you mentioned a consideration as a protector, then visiting Schutzhund clubs would also be a good idea in addition to reading this forum for a few months. If you are sure that you want a dog that brings a fair amount to the table, AND you have a Schutzhund club in mind that will accept you, then the litter announcement they placed on the UDC site would be interesting. The dam is a Korung dog and Sch3 the sire is Bronco v. Doberwach (one of the most famous working Dobermann's in recent history) I don't know if that one took, because I know of a few Bronco breedings that did not. It looks to me like they are trying to breed top flight working dogs. I got confused for a minute because the litter they have on the website I looked at with Agir as the sire was from 2 years ago.

| Check out this thread, it is the one mentioned above Recommended Breeders!
I don't think a lot of these people gave locations so it will take time to look up their websites and see if they are close and their dogs appeal to you.
Again take your time. |
