| | Alpha | Where are the good breeders in Ontario? I am planning to buy a dobe in the future but still wish to know all there is before making an informed and well-thought-out decision. I would like your opinions on which ones are the good breeders in Ontario and why. Thank you! |

| check out the breeder referal on Doberman Pinscher Club of Canada Inc., there is a list there of breeders in ontario who are members of the canadian dobe club, no guarantee they are all good but they are members of the club and there are good ones there.

| Not sure where you are located but there are dog shows all over Ontario that you will find good breeders of Dobermans at and unless you're my hubby, you'll have a good time to boot! lol.
I'm heading to one in Calidonia this weekend myself. Uh, not that I'm looking for a good breeder per say... but for knowledge and uh something to do. <grin>

| I'm in Ontario, though I won't go into "who" but having done the "good breeder" search myself I can tell you the "why" that matters to me.
I do not like the look of a euro type dog, so that eliminated several breeders off the bat; figure out what your prefer and that will narrow the field a fair bit.
Next was health testing. I will NOT buy from someone who is not enrolled in the heart program at Guelph, so that part was a no brainer.
I talked to quite a few prominent breeders in Ontario and was completely turned off. One did nothing but brag about wins and beating so and so into the ground etc...they said nothing about the dogs, the personality of the parents, and seemed to not care who they sold to as long as you showed up with cash.
Another was so focused on money all they talked about was how much this dog sold for, or how much that bitch brought in, or how much the stud fees on another dog were etc...again, nothing about the dogs themselves.
I have to live with my puppy. I do not want to buy from a breeder who has all their dogs sitting in a kennel until it's time to whelp. I wanted someone who lives with their dogs and loves them as pets first, show dogs/breeding dogs second.
That's how I chose the breeder I am waiting for a puppy from. I'm also willing to wait for however long it takes to get what I want, so I can afford to be picky.
Figure out what you are looking for and why, and then find that breeder with whom you feel comfortable. If you're lucky you'll find the right person and a relationship should form, something above "here's your puppy, thanks for the cash". |

There is a lot more than the heart study to consider when you look at breeding. Sadly, a "clear" result from Dr. O'Grady really is just that on the day of the testing.
Other tests that should be done are hips, and elbows for dysplasia, eyes and thyroid and of course vwd.
Then there's temperment. I like my dogs to have passed their TT and have a Championship too.
As for euro/north american, that's personal preference. I like the mix between the two, but that's me.
Go visit different breeders, but don't be fooled....lots of dogs that "live in our home and not a kennel" are sadly crated or locked in different rooms and never get the chance to run and play.
Good luck!

Good luck! | I was trying to be brief, yes there is more to testing...as someone who bred and showed dogs for almost 20 years (I now show and breed cats) I'm aware of what to look for...but I was trying to keep it simple. ;-) |

| Checkout Mary of Glengate Dobermans. She is in Woodstock, Ont, and works with Gualph (sp) University on the cardio screening program, etc! She has very nice dogs. (I guess I am biased as she has one of mine. LOL ). She is very concientious about her breeding program and especially the health aspect of her dogs. Good luck! |
