Non-toxic wood sealer/stain for whelping box?

OK, I don't know if this post actually belongs here or in another part of the forum. I want to find a wood sealer/stain for a whelping box. Obviously, it needs to be non-toxic, but I am having trouble finding something that I feel comfortable with. Does anybody know of or have used a particular product?

Workingk9's,

Wood sealers and/or stains aren't a very good choice for whelping boxes. They don't really offer enough protection to the underlying wood, scratch up easily and are much more difficult to clean thoroughly.

The best choice is probably a very good quality WHITE exterior enamel. The oil based enamels are tougher and generally more durable than the any of the water based ones--but they take longer to cure and when I whelped litters I made sure they had at least a month to cure before using them. The very best surface coating I ever found was a modified epoxy type in an industrial line from one of the major paint manufacturers--I don't even remember which paint company it was from but most of the major manufacturers have something similar.

High gloss is more effective than satin, eggshell or flat. And is tougher and more liquid resistant.

You can find virtually any coating in a non-toxic formula--just make sure that's what you specify.

my whelping box has vinyl on the bottom, not very green of me, but we replace it after each litter, works great for easy cleaning, and it's cheap to pick up a piece. I clean with just water and vinegar. Now, I think I might get some to do the sides of the box.

Yup, mine too, I have vinyl covering the wood - which of course is cheap, clean, easy to replace. I'd never use stain and I'd worry about splinters with wood. I have it on the sides and the bottom.
