| | Big Pup | How Much $$$$? Ok, let me preface this by saying that I'm very concerned about finding a GOOD breeder. But, does anybody have a suggestion for an "inexpensive" breeder? I understand the costs of being a breeder and I'm not suggesting that a $1500-2000 puppy isn't worth it. I just don't have that kind of money to spend at the moment. I realize I may have to wait until I DO have that kind of money, but I was curious if anyone here knew of an ethical breeder currently selling any pups for less?
Basically, my wife gave me the go ahead to get a dog, but I know she doesn't realize what she's saying. She's thinking in the hundreds of dollars, not thousands. So, I thought I MAY be able to find something a little less expensive. Otherwise, I'm going to have to wait until next year, as much as that kills me. |

| I'd save my money and wait. Good breeder's are not making any money even selling pups at $1,500-2,000. In the meantime perhaps you could foster a rescue for a while.

| | Alpha | You may be able to get a companion pup for $1,200 from a good breeder, but not less from what I know of.
How about rescuing?

| What state do you live in? I am in NC and companion puppies start maybe around $1000 and go up from there. I would save and wait for a quality Doberman, it will be worth the wait in the long run. |

| Companion pups will run you about $1500. Dobes are one of the most expensive breeds to have- my pup is 15 weeks old and has had two tummy infections that have required vet visits... $200 right there... not to mention ear posting supplies etc. Have you considered a rescue?
No matter what, be patient and dont support a BYB... they are always more expensive in the long run |

| I got Nino from a BYB for $200. He came full of worms. My vet told me Saturday that he was finally free of parasites. Yeeaaa. If I had to pay $1000 or more on a pup, I definitely would not have any. I also got my boxer from a BYB with no issues. Different Stokes for Different Fokes. |

| I agree with ClipClop, I do not support byb's in anyway shape or form. I just can't see giving money to people who are not contributing to the breed. |

| | Big Pup | Yeah, I guess I'll have to wait. I was just hoping I could find something along the lines of my last dog (german shepherd dog). I got him from a local breeder for $500. The "breeder" only had one pair of dogs. They were health tested and well cared for. They also had excellent working bloodlines. My dog's grandfather was the #1 or 2 rated schultzhund (sp?) in the world at one point. And the breeder was very specific about who he sold his pups to. But, I suppose shepherds are much more common than Dobes so the price is bound to be less and I did get an extroidinary deal my Luke. |

| you probably have the time to save up enough for a good quality dobe if you go to a reputable breeder, most don't breed often and have waiting lists. I would suggest, unless you decide to go for a rescue, to start the savings now, research out a good breeder and get on their waiting list. by the time your pup is ready you will have the $. and as for being one of the most expensive breeders, far from it! bull dogs start at $2500 and neo mastiffs at $3500.
