It's true dogs are expensive, and Dobes certainly more than small dogs. Although I've been fortunate to have dogs that haven't cost me a lot on vet bills (I chose my breeders carefully, but crossing fingers), I was always ready to face an unexpected event if I had to.

Here's my philosophy on owning dogs : the way I see it, my dogs are my hobby and passion. Hobbies are a necessity in life, you just can't do without them. Some like cars, some travel a lot, some like tasting fancy wines, sleep in fancy hotels, buying expensive art and so on.

Me ? I like dogs, and animals in general. So, instead of spending my money on other stuff, I spend it on my dogs !

And if you look at it this way, owning a dog costs less in a year than smoking. And instead of killing you, it's adding years to your life (proven fact) !

I just spent $2K, but I did speak to a breeder in western PA with beautiful pups for $800. Let me know if you want the link....I cant get it for you & you can make your own mind up.

I say go for a rescue..I understand you probably want your own little puppy to raise, but supporting a recsue dobe that has had a tough life would be a wonderful thing to do. Either decision you make good luck!
