| Money should not factor into the decision of buying a new puppy. You can spend 1500$ from a BYB or you can spend 1500$ from a professional breeder who has fostered a good health line of dobies. If money is a factor then check out the doberman rescue league. Or foster a dobie. The purchase price is only the beginning of the cost of owning a dobie. There are vet bills, food, toy, supplies, crates, fencing, ect. to consider. I wish you good luck in your search, but beg you not to go to a BYB. I have and will never do it again.

| If the initial cost is your big issue I know that some breeders will allow you to put 50% down and make monthly payments on the balance over 6 months. I have a friend that does that quite often........but you still need to save up. the great thing about saving for the dog of your dreams is it gives you time to think, and make sure it is what you really want. So do your research, find a breeder you really love, get on a waiting list, and start saving...if this is something you truly want. |

| To the OP, I am just trying to point out that rescues and breeders have the same requirements. Not saying at all that you do not have a good home evnironment.
Also I would be careful bringing in a Doberman with a 3 year old. I would wait a couple years for a Doberman. |

Thanks! And don't worry, I'm actually being very judicial in who I'm willing to buy a pup from.
I guess what I was really asking originally is this: Do any GOOD breeders sell pups for less than what I'm finding on the internet? That's all I'm asking. Because, I assume many of the breeders online are the better-known people with fancy titles on all their dogs' names, which is great, but not necessarily what I need. I was curious if there are any ethical, lesser-known but still devoted breeders out there who may not advertise on the internet. That's what I meant.
And let me say once again, you can all rest assured that I am aware of all the costs that come with dog ownership. I'm not so broke that I can't afford vet visits, food, heartguard, frontline, etc. It's just the large chunk that would come out of our savings initially that would hurt. I'm not sure we're in a position right now to spend that much of our reserve. I am 31 years old and there's only been a total of about 3 years of my life when I didn't own AT LEAST one dog. In fact, if you include all the hunting dogs I had as a kid, I've been the surrogate father of dozens of canines. If we start counting cats, horses, wild animals I rescued, birds, reptiles, fish, and other creepy-crawlies I could probably have stocked a medium-sized zoo by now. I'm just saying this to reiterate that I'm not ignorant of the costs of pet care. I appreciate all of your devotion to the proper care of animals, but you're preaching to the choir here.
And as a matter of fact, I've contacted quite a few of the well-known breeders over the past couple of months and all of them have been quite satisfied with my credentials as a prospective owner. So EASE UP on all assumptions that I don't know what I'm getting into.
I'm not jumping into anything. I've been researching for a while and just thought I'd ask about the pricing thing. I THINK if I did a poll there might be a couple of people here who got their dogs for less than a grand. I was just curious about the quality of the breeders that they did come from.
That is all. Carry on. |

| Occasionally purebred dobe puppies (byb) do end up in rescue groups too. It never hurts to just call around and ask

I believe I have. If not, I've contacted nearly all of them in Alabama and the surrounding states.
I really think I'm just going to save my pennies and go with the Breeder that I like the best. This thread was started more out of curiousity than anything else. |

That is all. Carry on. | Hey........at least you are here doing your research. That is important! This really IS a great place to learn some things about the breed, finding a good breeder, what to look for, etc.
To answer your question, yes...there are LOTS of great breeders who do not have websites, but all those fancy titles really do mean a great deal.
I will be the first person to say that a "title" does NOT mean EVERYTHING...BUT....it is important.
Depending on the title, it can mean the dog meets or is very close to the breed standard in conformation, it can mean that the dog has been temperament tested (which is something that would be VERY important to me if I had a 3 year old child) it can mean that the dog is athletic (agility, AD, Schutzhund) It can mean that the dog is obedient.....and it also means that the person who put those titles on the dog cared enough to spend the time and money to do so.
To buy a pet from a good breeder you are looking at (at least) $1000-1200. Sometimes more. It is NOT cheap to health test, title the dog, breed a litter (and care for the litter the way that it SHOULD be cared for) most good breeders also crop the ears of your puppy before it ever even comes home (another few hundred dollars).
So to answer your question......yes, it is more expensive to buy from a "good" breeder, but in the long run it is WELL worth it.
You might also search the "archives" on this forum for tips on finding a "good" breeder.
Good luck in your search.
