| There are many many wonderful Dobes in rescue who need forever homes and many are young dogs. I think I'd give that a shot if I were you. Our Dobe, Duke, is a rescue. When we adopted him he was still a puppy, only 10 mos. old, he is cropped/docked and he is a beautiful dog with a wonderful temperment. He loves everybody and everything, yet is very watchful and protective of his home. He's close to 20 mos. old now, still a giant puppy and everyone that has met him is just crazy about him. Perhaps you can foster a young Dobe first with the option to adopt. |

I realize I may have to wait until I DO have that kind of money, but I was curious if anyone here knew of an ethical breeder currently selling any pups for less?
Basically, my wife gave me the go ahead to get a dog, but I know she doesn't realize what she's saying. She's thinking in the hundreds of dollars, not thousands. So, I thought I MAY be able to find something a little less expensive. Otherwise, I'm going to have to wait until next year, as much as that kills me. | Something to think about though, is if you can't spend $1500 through a reputable breeder, what about the quality food, regular and unexpected vet visits, toys that need frequent replacing, crate(s), puppy classes and advanced/ongoing training etc. etc.???
And if you save diligently, I bet you CAN afford to buy your puppy through a reputable breeder. I've been putting away my gratuities from work for about 4 months and have saved $1600. I get paid $8 an hour plus a BUSSER's tip out. Which means I make about $12 an hour. I just had to make some other sacrifices in life to reach my goal. No cable TV, no evenings out, etc.
Since this is something I've wanted since I was a small child, I had no problem working hard to reach my goals. I'm off to work now for another double shift. (Lunch/Dinner) I'll be home in about 13 hours. BTW, I will not be keeping these hours once the puppy comes home in a couple of weeks. |

I knew there'd be at least one. Quote: |

| I'm well aware of all the other expenses. That's one reason I can't spend too much on the initial costs right now.
Anyway, thanks everybody. I'll probably just have to wait a while. |

| Rescue, Rescue, Rescue! PLEASE at least look into it and seriously consider it. You will not be dissapointed when you give a Dobe in need a forever home. |

| Part of the high cost of a well-bred pup comes from the fact that care has been taken to do health testing before breeding. It was about a year from the time I started researching reputable breeders until we brought Java home. If you keep that as your time frame and save a bit each month, you may be closer to your goal when you are in line for a pup that you think.
As has already been suggested, keep a rescue in mind. Individuals have been known to drop off wonderful, healthy Dobe pups/young Dobes at shelters simply because of circumstances. Pets are getting the short end of the stick due to the mortgage crisis. Check in with your local Dobe rescue, fill out an application and you may have your Dobe before you know it!
We came very close to adopting a year-old female this past December - sweetest face and disposition. had been dropped off to fend for herself in downtown Philly (don't get me started). The attending vet decided to keep her and give her the TLC she deserved - she had dropped down to 55 lbs.

| Yep, I'll say the same, get a rescue. I'm so glad I did and I'm sure you would be too when you see the love you'll get from a dog who really needs the home. Plus, the money you save on your puppy you'll be able to spend on a rescue dog. There are some wonderful, really deserving rescues out there. |

| If you do decide the rescue route, which is great; just know they just like reputable breeders have special requirements for you to meet. Like, they would want references on you and would more than like want to do a home visit. |

| | Big Pup | I've considered a rescue and even checked around at the rescues in my area. My main concern with a rescue dog is my 3 year old daughter. I don't want to take in just any mistreated dog. I know the circumstances of each animal varies greatly. I suppose if I found the right dog at a rescue I'd be more than willing to go that route. So far though, I haven't. Quote: |

| You seem a little condescending to me. If you'd like to compare dog and/or pet knowledge and resumes I'd be more than willing. I don't remember at any point saying that I'd be concerned with divulging any information on the home that I'll be giving to the dog. |

| The cost of having a puppy will hit you harder after you actually get the puppy. The initial cost isn't so bad. If you aren't prepared for the investment maybe adopting a rescue would be a better choice.

| I don't think that was the intention at all eminart. I think they were just tryin to point out that rescue organizations like breeders will want to approve of you and your home. Which is a good thing, Right? |
