Dealing with a breeder you have never dealt with before is always a little bit of a judgement call, so I guess I will just give you the standard spiel so you can make an informed decision.
The first thing I look for in a kennel/breeder is health testing. If both the sire and dam of the litter are not tested for vwd (bleeding disorder), thyroid functionality, CERF (eyes), OFA ratings (hips), and have either an echo or Holter test (heart functionality), then I do not pursue it any further. Genetic health is a major concern with dobermanns, and any breeder who will not make their best effort to screen out these problems in their breeding program is just not worth dealing with. As an added assurance, I prefer the breeder sell all of their dogs with limited registration, and a contract stating the stipulations under which the registration can be converted to full registration. (This usually includes a clean bill of health on all of the tests mentioned previously, usually some sort of recognized conformation or working title, and a breeding contract stating the dog will only be bred to other health tested/non-z factor dogs, etc.) To me, that is further assurance that the breeder is dedicated to the breed and their breeding program.
Another thing to think about is what you plan on doing with the dog. VonAsgard appears to put their primary breeding focus on serious working litters. I can tell you first hand that a "hard core" working dog, with crazy drive levels, is definitely rewarding and alot of fun, but it is not for everyone, and if you have never had a dobie (or any breed) selectively bred for those qualities, it may be a little more of a chore than you bargained for. That is not to talk you into or out of anything, but rather to get you thinking about what you really want in the dog and don't want, then try to find a breeder whos breeding program and goals produce the type of dog that you are hoping for. |

| I don't know anything about German working titles, but they appear to have a few. I do not see any health testing, but that doesn't mean they haven't had it I guess. They are a little pricey at $2500 per pup, plus $300 for an ear crop...and if you want them trained it is an additional $570 or $19 per day. They are having 3 litters for 2008.......Some of these things are warning signs for me personally. |

| I've seen some posts from this breeder on another forum that just kind of turns me off everytime I see them. Can't really explain why, maybe it is the working military dog thing - I disagree with Dobes for that type of work environment, or maybe just the way they always seem to jump in saying their dogs are available and are the best when someone is looking. Can't really say there is anything wrong with that, it just hits me wrong for some reason when I read them. I've seen her looking for dogs to sell too, and I don't like that, but again, just me. I always wonder what military their dogs are in, as I sure don't know any dobes working in the military here in the states.
I think there are some red flags, but really don't know anything about them personally. I like some of their bloodlines though.

| | Alpha | I'm quite sure that VonAsgard is a kennel that I've run into in the past on a couple of "working" boards. I stopped going to one of them (and it now seems to be closed) after the kennel owner launched an entirely unnecessary diatribe at a person who asked a reasonable question. His spiel was all about how different the training, breeding etc of "military dogs" was from simple "working/podium" dogs. In his estimation "show" dogs did not really deserve to live.
I can't say that I agreed with much he had to say. I sure wouldn't send anyone there for a puppy.
Addition: I know the person who I thought was Von Asgard was a man--not a woman--so I don't know what exactly to make of that. I'm still quite sure the kennel he said he was associated with was VonAsgard but I don't have any idea what his association might be since the kennel owner is clearly a woman.
