| | Lil Pup | Looking for a good breeder around the VA, NC, SC areas? Hi everyone I've been following the posts for a while now and have been impressed by the help you all offer. My family and I have been looking for a Dobe for about 6 months now, we've been to some breeders homes and weren't happy, also we've sent out emails to talk to others and got very little help. The search is getting exhaustive. I have 3 young children and we are looking for a family companion/guard. Does anyone have any recommendations in the VA, NC, SC areas. Thanx all for your help in advance. |

| Not to squelch your dream, but I know a lot of breeders will not sell a puppy to someone with 3 young children. The breeder I got my show girl from will not sell to anyone under 30, or who has young children! From 30 yrs experience, she has learned that quite often those puppies just don't work out for one reason or another and end up coming back to her.
Do start with the DPCA list and be prepared to answer a lot of questions about your experience with Dobermans and your commitment to a new puppy. Have you had a Dobe before? Have you had a lot of dog experience?
Good luck with your search.... |

| | Lil Pup | We have checked the dpca.org site but the first hand knowledge of this forum can't be beat. I have quite a bit of experience with dogs, I have owned them all of my life, 3 labs, 1 chow, my aunt actually turned me on to the Dobermann hers was beautiful, and smarter than any other dog I had worked with. The reason why I am not looking for a lab, is because all of mine would have let Charles Manson in. With 3 kids (1 is 13 don't know if that helps) that is not really acceptable. We have been out to several sites but we weren't crazy about some of the things we saw, so that is why I have reached to this forum to offer it's knowledge, and help. |

| just because someone is listed in the DPCA referral doesn't mean their a good breeder. I looked for a while in the same area as you and found one that was downright bad, yet still on the dpca list. ask a whole lot of questions.

| | Alpha | That one child is 13 certainly helps, I think. In addition, I would make sure that you point out that you have taught your kids how to behave around dogs, dog "language", etc (I'm assuming that you have....).
If you visit a breeder, you'll be able to show that you're on top of things and don't let your kids run wild with puppies.

But the under 30 part kicks me out |

| Keep looking - There are people on this forum who have waited years to get their perfect Dobe. Being diligent and not settling for less will pay off in the long run. You may also want to consider adopting an adult from a reputable rescue (lists of organizations can be found on the DPCA site). Puppies and kids = lots of work! A Dobe pup alone is a lot of work! I'm not trying to discourage you - pups and kids aren't impossible but there is something to be said about bringing in a stable adult who has already been potty trained, is done with chewing and who has already found his brain
Good luck and keep us updated!
Welcome to DT

| | Lil Pup | We have thought about adopting an adult. In your opinion, would that work out with kids, the dog not being raised as a puppy around them? Would the adult Dobe do okay around kids? |
