A female puppy would probably be your best choice.

I would be hesitant to adopt an older dog with three young children just because the dog may not be used to the activity level of three kids. I adopted a rescue dog but my kids were in college when I did this. I was not willing to put a dog or my children into a situation that might not work out when they were younger.
I agree with rosamburg that a female pup would probably be the best route. Rescues sometimes get puppies if you want to go that route. Keep trying breeders as well. You can get a feeling if it is a "fit" for you or not when you talk to a few of them. In the meantime, you and your children could go to some dog shows and see what type of Dobe you like, etc. Check out the obedience rings as well as conformation. The shows that also have agility are really fun to attend!

Geez, I would never have a dobe if all breeders wouldnt give to a person under 30, I am only 22, and a much better home than ALOT(not all but alot) of 30+ owners...that sucks. Maybe if the people had references they would give someone under 30 a dog?

I personally think if the breeder knows that you are a good home and can take exceptional care of the dog, you can get a puppy at pretty much any age. I wouldn't discriminate age.

Ellen, if you got your dogs from GG, I KNOW that they would sell me a puppy as I am friends with them and I am only 22.
