We are very pleased to announce that Dr. Kate Meurs of Washington State
University College of Veterinary Medicine has identified a genetic mutation
responsible for causing cardiomyopathy in Dobermans. A reasonably priced
test will be commercially available in about two weeks through the
Veterinary Cardiac Genetics Laboratory at WSU. (

Dr. Meurs is coming to the National to present her findings and answer
questions. She is scheduled to speak on Monday, October 4th, 2010 at 10:00
a.m. in the Emerald Room. We will have the room for Q & A as well until 12
noon. Please spread the word so that everyone who wants to be there is made
aware of this development.
Dr. Meurs deserves many accolades for this long awaited accomplishment for
our breed!
This is AMAZING. I lost my doberman max to DCM at 8 years old. I cant wait to see how breeders will respond to this knew test.
This really made my day!

Is ANYONE on DT going to the national and planning to attend Dr. Meurs discussion? If so,would it be possible to share highlights of what she says with the rest of us who cannot attend? That would be so great! I am really bummed that I cannot go to the national now. ;o(

This was just posted this morning soooo I would think it wouldnt be on the list... I would think something this big someone will video tape it ?? I'm hopig so as I cant be there either...I' almost thought of flying there for the day ;-)
Yes there will be alot of tears shed from breeders , myself included. i'm still in shock!
if I hear anything else I will surely post it.
The only problem I have with this is, this test will probley say yes the dog is going to go on and get cardio BUT it wont beable to say at what age! so what do we do with those dogs..they could get it at 4 or 12? sure you wont breed them but still you wont know when they'll get it to beable to prepare for it. Just a thought?
Well, I guess we will still have to holter and echo, just like before. Im fine with that, I just hope I dont have to live in fear wondering if this holter/echo is going to come back negative, or will the next? I already told Perrin that he has to live to be at least 21 (he is normally very obedient). I love this dog so stinkin' much.
Can anyone confirm this? I got it on my club email list as well but it doesn't seem to be listed anywhere on Washington State's website, I guess that would make sense if she plans to announce it at the National. Praying to god this is true and not just a misinterpretation...

What kind of confirmation do you want? If your a DPCA memeber you got the email. I guess you could email Dr. Meuers. What was posted in the first post is exactly what the email says.
I hope that we do not have to wait until after the national to hear her findings, it would be nice for those that are not attending to be able to read them. The sooner the information comes out the better I would say.
What a wonderful breakthrough for our beloved breed. I truly hope this is not a misinterpretation or joke. I can't wait to hear more about it and how/where to get the test.
If this goes forward, I personally will not obtain a puppy from any breeder that does not test. It will be a priority and if that means I can't get a puppy, so be it!
I will let her know and ask her to come by DT. I for one would be the happiest person alive if this is true and others can be spared the sadness I've been going through since Petey's diagnosis! I'm in tears right now.
I just happened to be on the phone with my boys Cardiologist this morning and she was already aware of the event and the Dr hosting it.
She had nothing but good things to say about her. I hope this will help change the Doberman Breed! How great would it be if 10 years from now DCM was just an old, painful memory in these dogs.
That is another question (fear) what will happen to the future puppies that are tested and proven to go on to get cardio??? who will want them ? thats a scary thought...
As well as is this gene just for DCM ?? what about sudden death cardio??? still wont tell us if that dog will go on to get arrythmias... I so wish I could be there...... so many questions to ask, I hope they cover everything at this meeting.
I'm in tears too Carol. Having lost Kheper so recently to DCM, having my two young ones now.... so many mixed emotions. I know my two are with me for a reason
I so hope this is really true, if so, I know their are breeders out there that will step up!!!
Meur has an older studies online. She's been at it for awhile. If the DCPA announced it via email, it really is looking like this could be a day to "go down in history" for the Doberman world!
I know. I can't help but stop to think about all the people who will find out their dogs are affected. Although they've discovered the gene, there are no accompanying breakthrough treatments or cures.
This will likely be bittersweet.
