The heat can also cause an ear to wilt briefly even in adult dogs as well.

I've heard that broken cartilege can make an ear not stand..never seen it personally. But I wouldn't be too fast to jump to that conclusion. There's likely a more reasonable explanation, including the ears just aren't ready to be left down for any length of time.
