Personally I agree with the plain old nylon flat buckle collar on a puppy (they grow so fast), and I can attest to the nylon leash laying your hand open (so I would go good quality leather)......

I do think that no all dogs need a choke or a prong collar, and if you start training early you may never need them, they are tool to help you train (not that I have much room to talk I ended up needing the prong as I had no idea how to train loose leash walking, and now am trying to wean us off of it.)
