I just use one of those adjustable nylon buckle collars on puppies, that way they're not constantly outgrowing them. The fancy collars come later.

NOTHING replaces a good 1/2" wide, 6 ft. long leather leash. Those nylon leashes may be colorful and cute, but they can cut your hand wide open if the dog takes off and the leash "zips" through your hand.
