I don't know what the stats are in the USA but here in the UK the group most likely to be assaulted and/or murdered is young men under 25, not women. Attacks on women get much more publicity but the fact is that women are less likely to be the victims of violent crimes than are men.

But I do agree that everyone - male or female - should know how to handle themselves in the event of an attack. There may be nothing you can do, because the nature of many attacks involves stealth, surprise, and cowardice - the attacker takes no chances and gives his victim no chance to respond (as my highly trained male martial arts instructor found out when he was attacked from behind by someone wielding a length of scaffolding strut). But at least if you can handle yourself you may emerge alive from some sorts of attack.
