I am thinking that four/five cups a day would be appropriate for a normal size pup. At five months he should weigh around 40/50#. But since I can't see his size I don't know what he should weigh. Above is a generalization.
It looks like you are feeding him the right amount at 3 cups especially if you tried to increase and he had runny stools.
Keep him on the 1/2 cup Proplan for four or five days since he is so sensitive to change. Make his increases very gradual and see if maybe that helps. 4/5 days on 1/3 of meal then 4/5 days on 1/2 of meal. Then go to 3/4 of meal to all Proplan.
I usuallly started with 1/4 instead of 1/3 by the way.
Have to leave now. Best of luck and keep us posted.
