| our first experience in the dobie world was with a BYB. We put a $500 deposit on a puppy. However, we knew it was non-refundable. We backed out of the puppy as we learned more about BYB'ism and other things. Because we were not comfortable with the decision, the BYB at least had the decency to give us half our money back. Your situation is different - it sounds like you didn't know the deposit was non-refundable and there was a communication breakdown. This breeder should at least meet you halfway and give you half back.
