| I would say try the 180 degree turn every time he starts to lead in toward you. He will have to adjust himself by going the other way. Try it once turning with him on the outside and once with him on the inside and see if one works better than the other. Also, by doing this he won't be rewarded for going where he wants to.
You could also try just stopping until he moves a bit away from you, then continue.
It takes more than a couple of tries (usually several) with either technique for the dog to "get it".
