Most people can afford to care for their pets in everyday circumstances, but what you are really suggesting is that only those who have a good few thousand lying around spare should have pets. I think you'd find that means most of us would have to give up our pets. Life simply doesn't work that way.
To be honest, IMO there are too many arguments against you to list, but I'll just do a couple
Pet insurance is not a necessity but human insurance is? My dog IS my child. When you agree to take on an animal you owe it the very best care you can give it - not just the very best care you can afford to give it. Do I have to quote Shakespeare here? These animals feel pain just as we do, they deserve treatment when they need it. The only way I can be certain of doing that for my baby in every circumstance is by having insurance. It has always proved itself worth it for us. I know it's a for-profit business, as are vets, and costs will always go up - it happens everywhere. You made the point that vets can discount for those without insurance, so whether you're insured or not, you don't lose out. I'm sorry, but your arguments make no sense to me. Veterinary costs going up has nothing to do with insurance.
