I would also try feeding canned pumpkin. It stops the runs just like that. Use 1 tsp per every 10 lbs of weight and make sure you get canned pumpkin and pupkim pie mix. Pumpkin pie mix has way too much sugar.

I would not worry about putting your hands in his bowl. I actually hand fed one of my rescues for several months to establish a better bond. By putting your hand in his bowl you will not cause the dog to become food aggressive. Food aggression is a problem seen more with dogs that have starved it's a matter of they are guarding thier food.

I would be concerned about eating the food to quickly. I would divide the meal into smaller portions and work in some obedience so he doesn't inhale.
