Complications with neutering?

In the distant future when I hopefully get a male Dobe, I will have to encounter this choice, and I suppose that the +ives of neutering outweigh the -ives. However, even though this is supposedly a routine operation, are there any risks involved or have you heard of any horror stories (they didn't make it or suffered side-effects, etc)? How likely is the increased risk of related illnesses if the dog is left intact? Thanks.
