The heat cycle can last longer than 3 weeks. I just bred my bitch on day 25....ovulation occured on day 23. (Counted from the first day you see blood) The entire cycle is actually longer even that this....counting pre estrus and everything that happens after ovulation.

Most bitches start to bleed heavily about day 5 and can go that way for several weeks. Usually just before ovulation the discharge gets a bit clearer but not always.

The safest bet is to wait until all discharge stops and the vulva appears to be returning to normal. Then wait one more week after that to be sure you are ok before assuming the season is over. Many people think that as the discharge gets clearer and time goes on the bitch is out of season....LOL that is how many an accident happens. As you can see from my bitch..... had I assumed she was no longer in season after day 21 I would have missed the opportunity to breed her altogether.

Good luck
Elaine
