To add to this, I really wouldn't set any kind of a deadline, like you want to buy one before Christmas. Even after you find a reputable breeder, you'll frequently discover they have waiting lists for their puppies. They also don't have puppies available all the time..they might only breed a litter once a year or so (sometimes longer).
A well bred puppy from titled, health tested parents usually runs around $1500. If someone is selling them for less, they almost certainly have cut some major corners, and that can manifest itself in temperament problems and/or health problems later on down the line.
